Workshop Five

Workshop Five:

Aim: This workshop was created to develop working with three males and begin to create a phrase for a trio through the use of the chosen value being explored.

Value: There are two chosen principles explored and tried in this workshop, the first one being the use of three males all dancing together, without creating it to be a stereotypical manly but to create an artistic and interesting combination of movement that compliments them and challenges them; this comes from Forsythe and how he has explored male groupings and how this can be explored in a way that focuses on the creativity and movement that highlights them as dancers. The second value is through a concept that Crystal Pite has put into place that I thought would be good to try, to see. whether it is something that could work for me or not, this was to think of this as a duet, not a trio, how can one person at a time be the partner and the rest of the dancers be the other partner as one.

Outcome: The workshop was insightful, it gave me a better understanding of how I could incorporate Pite's method into a larger section with more dancers, as opposed to this section where maybe it is difficult to see the difference as clearly from this concept and that of a trio. However, I still think it brought out dynamic and interesting choreography from working with this intention and having the support of the dancers in doing this. In the video there is a dancer, George, missing, this was because he could not stay for the full workshop and so had to leave early, therefore, he isn't in the video however we created this phrase whilst he was still there and so would be in this section of material. I do think also that the idea of having all males doing this movement is something I would like to introduce more into my work as a choreographer. I enjoy seeing the support and naturalness they bring, and so think it is definitely something that tends to my personal values and as a contemporary dancer and choreographer would consider more within my work.
